🇧🇷 German Pension Refund for Brazilian Citizens

As a Brazilian citizen, you can generally claim a German pension refund if you have fewer than 60 German contribution months, at least 24 months have passed since your last mandatory pension contribution in Germany, the EU, the UK, Türkiye or an ex-Yugoslav country, and you live outside the EU and the UK. One passport matters more than any other rule: this applies if you're a Brazilian-only citizen — an EU passport, even unused, closes the route.
Our team in Berlin has helped Brazilians get their pension money back since 2015 — fully online, quick, and friendly.

Can Brazilians Really Claim a Refund?
Most Brazilians who worked in Germany can reclaim their pension contributions if all of these hold:
-
You're a Brazilian citizen — and not a dual citizen of an EU country (see the trap below)
-
You have fewer than 60 German contribution months
-
At least 24 months have passed since your last mandatory pension contribution in Germany, the EU, the UK, Türkiye or an ex-Yugoslav country
-
You live outside the European Union and the United Kingdom
Living in Brazil never blocks the claim — and neither do your INSS contributions. Unsure where you stand? Our free eligibility check gives you a clear answer — no charge, no risk.
The dual-citizenship trap — read this before anything else
Brazil has one of the world's highest rates of European ancestry citizenship: an Italian passport through your nonno, a Portuguese one through your avó. Under German refund law, holding any EU citizenship blocks the refund completely — even if the passport has never left the drawer, even if your only time in the EU was Germany itself. Brazilian-only citizens: you're clear. Dual citizens with an EU country: the refund route is closed until German retirement age.
And if you're eligible for an EU passport through ancestry but haven't claimed it yet — sequence matters enormously: eligibility is checked at the date of your application, so claim your German refund first, then pursue the European passport. In that order, you can have both. In the reverse order, the refund is gone forever.
How Much Do Brazilians Usually Get?
In 2026 so far, Brazilian clients received €14,478 on average — across all nationalities, results range from under €200 to over €38,000. Your refund may include:
-
100% of all mandatory pension contributions paid from your salary in Germany
-
50% of voluntary contributions (including freelance or self-employed work)
The pension contribution rate is 9.3% of gross salary, up to a monthly ceiling (Beitragsbemessungsgrenze) of €8,450 in 2026 (2025: €8,050). Only income up to this cap counts for your refund.
When can you apply?
24 full calendar months after your last mandatory pension contribution in Germany, the EU, the UK, Türkiye, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia or Serbia — counted from the last month of employment or credited benefits, not from your deregistration date. Eligibility is checked at the date of your application: you can start working in Europe the day after submitting, and a later return does not undo a claim that was valid when filed.
One honest note: the German pension office can see EU and UK insurance records — the systems are digitally connected. Claiming while actually living or insured in the EU or UK surfaces retrospectively, the refund is reclaimed, and legal consequences can follow. If your situation is unclear, ask us first.
How Fast Is the Refund Process?
With our help, most Brazilian applicants receive their full refund in about 8 weeks; filing alone often takes 6 months or longer. We prepare each claim so it can be processed as efficiently as possible: our Berlin-based legal partners communicate directly with the German pension authority, and all paperwork, translations and troubleshooting are handled for you.
Processing times ultimately depend on the responsible pension office. Some claims take longer because of departmental workloads or internal checks — that's normal: your entitlement doesn't shrink while you wait, and from the seventh month after a complete application, the pension office owes you 4% annual interest. If your claim hasn't completed within about three months, we contact the pension office directly; at six months, we escalate to the office's management.
How Will I Receive My Money?
No German bank account needed. Your refund is paid into a secure escrow account operated by a German law firm, then transferred to the account of your choice — in Brazil or anywhere worldwide, in the currency you choose, and the account can be held in your name or even a family member's.
In practice, most of our Brazilian clients provide a EUR account with Wise (a EUR IBAN) — usually the most convenient route: the refund arrives in euros with no conversion at the receiving bank, and you exchange to BRL whenever the rate suits you.
For a transfer straight to a Brazilian bank account in BRL instead, have these ready:
-
Beneficiary full account name
-
Beneficiary CPF (11 digits)
-
Beneficiary mobile phone number
-
Beneficiary IBAN (29 digits)
-
Bank SWIFT
-
Bank branch code (3 digits)
What Documents Are Needed?
Your Brazilian passport, your German pension number (Versicherungsnummer) — [our German social security number guide explains where to find it — and your deregistration certificate (Abmeldebescheinigung), if available. Lost a document? We'll help you recover it or find an alternative — and if you never deregistered when leaving Germany, we handle the deregistration now. You don't need to obtain your insurance record first — the final refund statement (Bescheid) shows it in full.
Is the process fully digital?
Yes — you submit your details and sign digitally, and we handle all communication with the pension office. One document needs a notary: we prepare a short Certificate of Life and Nationality for you, which you can have notarized online or at any local notary — most clients simply walk in without an appointment and send us the scan the same day. No original documents ever need to be mailed.
What Does It Cost?
With us, you never pay anything until your refund has arrived. Our 9.75% success fee — capped at a maximum of €2,500 even for very large refunds — covers complete legal processing, escrow transfers, all required translations, personal support in English or German, VAT and every admin expense. No upfront payments, no hidden costs.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have 60 months of contributions? Even one day of work in a month counts as a full month. Add up all your months, including credited unemployment and parental-leave periods — under 60, and you're likely eligible.
When can I go back to Europe after applying? You can start working in Europe the day after your claim is submitted — what matters is your eligibility at the time you apply.
Do my INSS contributions affect the German refund? No — Brazilian pension contributions never block your German claim and never restart the waiting period.
How much does the service cost? 9.75% of your refunded amount, capped at €2,500 — covering VAT, legal and admin expenses. Nothing upfront; you pay only after your refund is transferred.
Is a German bank account required? No — your refund goes through the law firm's escrow account, then anywhere you wish, in your chosen currency.
