Generally yes, after leaving Germany, when two things hold: you have no right to keep paying voluntary German pension contributions where you now live — which is why residence in the EU or the UK blocks the claim, and why living in Uruguay doesn't — and at least 24 months have passed since your last mandatory pension contribution in Germany, the EU, the UK, Türkiye or an ex-Yugoslav country. Two more boxes complete the picture: your German record holds fewer than 60 contribution months (from 60, you've earned a retirement pension instead), and no German, EU, EEA, Swiss or UK passport sits beside the Uruguayan one — a second citizenship blocks even if never used. Residence in India is the one exotic exception: it blocks refunds for every nationality except Indian citizens.
Uruguayan pension contributions at home never block the German claim and never restart the waiting period.

Every calendar month with at least one insured day counts in full, and months credited for unemployment benefits or child-raising periods count too. Below 60, the refund route is open once the other conditions are met. At 60 or more, the lump sum closes and a German old-age pension at retirement age takes its place — payable in Uruguay. The two are strict alternatives when both could apply: a completed refund pays out the entire refundable balance and dissolves the old insurance relationship, so refunded months never become pension months.

While you were employed in Germany, 9.3% of your gross salary (the rate since 2018) was deducted up to the income threshold — €8,450 per month in 2026 (2025: €8,050) — and transferred to the German pension insurance. The refund returns 100% of those employee deductions and 50% of any voluntary contributions; the employer's share stays behind. Our retained completed paid cases across all nationalities show an average refund of €11,571.66 and a median of €10,327.10 (calculated 24 August 2026), with completed refunds on record from under €200 to over €53,000.

Our current dataset: more than three quarters of our 300 most recent completed refunds reached the client escrow account within three months — 229 of 300 (76.3%) within 90 days of complete submission — see the full data and methodology. Individual processing times vary with the responsible pension office; 93.3% of our latest 300 completed refunds reached escrow within six months. Where a case crosses the six-month line without a decision, German law can provide 4% annual interest from the seventh calendar month after a complete application, and an inactivity action (Untätigkeitsklage) can become available as a case-dependent last resort — in our operating history, none has yet been required. During an active claim, we track known response deadlines within the managed scope and send a status update at least every four weeks — a process designed to avoid preventable delays.

9.75% of the refunded amount, capped at €2,500 including VAT — nothing upfront, no minimum fee, payable only after your refund has arrived. The fee covers the agreed managed administrative scope, including our partner law firm's support within that scope; ordinary German correspondence and the decision are explained and translated into English as part of the service, certified translations by separate agreement. Separate representation in an objection, appeal or court proceeding is not included automatically.

Digital for most clients from start to finish on their side — details, signatures and document exchange online, pension-office correspondence handled by us within the agreed scope. Two practical notes: the Certificate of Life and Nationality we prepare must be confirmed by a notary or another authority accepted by the responsible pension office (online notarization often accepted; any local notary or certification cost is borne by the client), and when DRV Oldenburg-Bremen is the office responsible for your refund, we prepare the power of attorney and payment declaration and ask you to send us the signed originals — a limited exception rather than the rule.
Documents to gather: Uruguayan passport, German pension number (Versicherungsnummer — where to find it), rough employment history, payout account details, and the Abmeldung if available. We can help recover your pension number, German deregistration is available as an optional €50 add-on (including VAT), and we obtain and review the relevant account information during the managed process where required.

Through the escrow account operated by our German partner law firm: the agreed fee is deducted there, and the balance is transferred to the bank account you nominate — Uruguayan accounts included. A third-party account can be used where the required account-holder declaration and compliance checks are satisfied. Account-holder checks, international sanctions and banking restrictions can limit where — and in which currency — the money can be sent

Does living in Uruguay block the claim? No — Uruguay is fine. The block applies to residence in the EU, the UK and India, where voluntary-insurance rights (or India's special agreement clause) stand in the way.
Do my Uruguayan pension contributions matter? No — they neither block the German refund nor restart the 24-month waiting period.
What if I reach 60 German months? The lump sum closes; a German old-age pension at retirement age takes its place, payable in Uruguay.
Can I go back to Europe after filing? Yes — eligibility is checked at the date of your application, so a validly filed claim stands. Before filing, new mandatory insurance in Germany, the EU, the UK, Türkiye or an ex-Yugoslav country restarts the 24-month count.
What is the fee? 9.75% of the refunded amount, capped at €2,500 including VAT — nothing upfront, no minimum, covering the agreed managed administrative scope including our partner law firm's support within that scope. Separate representation in an objection, appeal or court proceeding is not included automatically. No refund, no fee.
